Composition [edit]

By 1975 though, The Isley Brothers had hit their pace and constitute their place in the musical ecosystem, primarily a funk and soul outing, The Heat Is On features elements of rock.[2] [three] The latter musical style is by and large provided by the Jimi Hendrix-influenced guitar of Ernie Isley.[2] The album is function of a succession of slickly-produced, successful soul records issued by the Isley Brothers during the 1970s that were divided between startlingly tough funk songs and subdued romantic ballads.[four] This musical formula for the album serves every bit a evolution of the grouping'due south transitional sound last featured on their landmark 10th album, 3 + 3 (1973).[four]

The sound of the Isleys had shifted enormously from their early on days as a song trio. The addition of Ernie, Marvin and Chris Jasper had transformed them into a tight, urgent funk powerhouse with the huge bonus of the amazing vocal abilities of Ronald. They were a juggernaut, churning out a winning combination of massive funk grooves and slinkily seductive slow jams.

The Heat Is On is notable for its two radio singles, the album's angry funk opener "Fight the Power (Part 1 & ii)" and the melodic soul ballad "For the Dearest of You (Part 1 & two)".[5] [vi] One critic cited the former song equally the Isley Brothers' "most overtly political tune to date".[7] Co-ordinate to writer Colin Larkin, the album'due south contrasting sides, with i side comprising uptempo funk and the other comprising a suite of smooth soul, represent "the pinnacle of both genres".[4] Side one's closer, "Hope Y'all Feel Meliorate Love (Part ane & 2)", contrasts both of the styles, as it contains melodic verses and a forceful chorus and is blest with another Ernie solo that underlines the sheer genius of his guitar piece of work to a driving, mid-tempo groove.
